New York City Motorcycle Permit Practice Test

When preparing to change lanes on a multi-lane road, it's essential to check both the lane immediately next to you and the far lane. This ensures that you are aware of any vehicles that may be positioned in those lanes, as well as their speeds and directions. By checking the lane next to you, you can identify vehicles that are directly adjacent and may be in your path. Additionally, checking the far lane helps you to spot vehicles that might be entering your lane from further back or are positioned in a way that might affect your maneuver.

This comprehensive check is vital for safety because it allows you to make an informed decision about when it is safe to change lanes. It helps prevent collisions and ensures that you are fully aware of surrounding traffic conditions. Relying solely on side mirrors or only checking the immediate lane could lead to dangerous situations, such as missing a vehicle in your blind spot or not noticing another vehicle quickly approaching in the far lane. Therefore, conducting a thorough check before changing lanes is essential for safe driving practices.
